PURPOSED FOR THE PEOPLE STATEMENT

The people spoke. And their voices were overridden.

In Orleans Parish, the voters elected Calvin Duncan with nearly 70 percent of the vote, a man who survived wrongful incarceration and stood ready to bring transparency to a broken system.

But before he could take office, Governor Jeff Landry signed legislation eliminating the very position the people voted for.

Let’s be clear.

This law did not come years before the election.

It did not come during the campaign.

It came right before the people’s chosen candidate was set to take office.

Now the duties have been transferred to another office, and the will of the voters has been sidelined.

Supporters call it efficiency.

But the people are asking efficiency for who?

Because when you erase an elected position after the votes are counted, you are not fixing government.

You are rewriting the outcome.

This is bigger than one man.

This is about whether the people’s vote actually means something.

Purposed For The People stands on truth, accountability, and justice and we will continue to call out any action that raises serious concerns about voter suppression, political interference, and the silencing of our communities.

The fight is not over.

The courts will now decide.

But one thing remains clear:

The people voted. And that should matter.
